Modern design style began in the early 20th century, around the 1920s, and is associated with the Modernist movement in art and architecture. It emerged primarily in Europe, through the Bauhaus School in Germany and De Stijl art movement in the Netherlands, prior to being prominent in the United States. Its basis of simplicity through clean lines, innovation through industrial materials, and principle of "form follows function" still influences design today.
A Modern home promotes open functional spaces, simplistic geometric forms, and showcase structural materials. Natural light is important and achieved through floor to ceiling windows and skylights. Rectilinear forms dominate the style through architecture, cabinetry, and furniture. Structural metal beams and concrete columns are minimally detailed to show beauty in simplicity.

Modern finishes enhance the overall design, creating cohesive & harmonious spaces that focuses on practicality. Wall finishes vary from neutral paint, plaster, and slim wood panels, while flooring is prominently concrete or hardwood. Cabinetry is seamless panel design with marble countertops and black or stainless finishes. Leather and wool are used in textiles and rugs to soften the space.
Modern furniture emphasizes simplicity and elegance through form & materials, creating an inviting atmosphere. A mix of straight and curved lines with natural & industrial materials bring visual interest to the space. High back lounge chairs act as an accent piece to the low profile modular sofas with small side tables that can be easily moved.

Lighting emphasizes clean lines, functional design, and minimalist aesthetics. With the LED technology, recessed cove and linear fixtures are frequently used. Exposed track lighting create contrast to the ceiling, while large scale round or dome pendants create an accent feature. Lamps are minimal but utilize wood, glass, & fabric finishes.

Modern decoration focuses on a clean aesthetic while embracing individual expression through carefully curated elements. Abstract or minimalist artwork is key in bringing character into the space, along with patterned and plush pillows. Sculptural forms through planters, pottery, or candle holders bring in a curated handmade feel.
