Cottage Core design style emerged in the late 2010's as a design, fashion, and lifestyle trend. The style reflects a longing for simpler, rural life, characterized by romanticized ideas of living in harmony with nature, self-sufficiency, and traditional domestic tasks like gardening, baking, and crafting. Particularly, the English countryside cottage architecture and Art and Crafts artisan furniture, textiles, and decor are the foundation of this design style.
English countryside cottages are the foundation for interior details in Cottage Core style. From multi-paned windows, cozy reading nooks, lower ceilings, built-in bookcases, arched doorways, and brick fireplaces, the design evokes a sense of historic nostalgia and comfort. The floor plan separates into individual rooms for the feeling of coziness, while ensuring views to the outdoors.
Cottage Core finishes are rustic, warm, and bring a sense of whimsy. The flooring is reclaimed or distressed wood, while stone or brick are used for quaint fireplaces. Walls are painted beadboard or adorned in small patterned botanical wallcoverings. Furniture showcases natural fiber textiles like cotton and linen in pastel colors. Hand woven and braided rugs soften the space & create a cozy feel.
Cottage Core furniture is eclectic, hand-made, and comfortable. Second-hand finds bring character and history, like an oversized floral patterned sofa paired with an intricate wood spindle table. Cushioned seating at a window ledge or corner benches creates an intimate moment. The mix of type and style of furniture allow for some whimsy.

Lighting is central to creating the cozy and ambient atmosphere of the Cottage Core style. Exposed bulb pendants with pleated or fabric shades evoke a simplicity of earlier times, while woven or wicker lamp shades create a textural rustic feel. All fixtures are rather small in scale with intricate detailing to nod back to a hand-made artisan feel.

Cottage Core decoration celebrates simplicity, connection to nature, and an old-world charm. Hand-made baskets to display fresh flowers or antique frames with botanical prints bring in a natural element to the walls. Ceramic jars, vases, and cups run along open shelving for ease of use, while old books and candlesticks bring in a cozy element.
